Woman robbed of poker winnings at apartment complex

She knew when to hold 'em, and she knew when to fold 'em - her poker winnings, that is.

And like the Gambler, this Southside resident learned the "secret to survivin'" is knowing what to throw away and what to keep.

In this case, she turned over her $1,000 winnings at the point of a small silver handgun. The robbery took place shortly after midnight Monday when the 51-year-old victim and a 53-year-old friend returned to the Plantation Apartments at 7061 Old Kings Road S. The victim told police she had won a lot of money playing poker in Orange Park.

As they walked to their apartment, a man in a dark hat with a dark rag over his face came up, pointed a gun at her and demanded money. The victim told police the man's voice sounded familiar.

Snowmobilers enjoy Chaseburg poker run

CHASEBURG — Kyle and Bridgette Klum know the winding snowmobile trails of Vernon County.

The Viroqua couple has traversed the routes often since they opened in December, even braving bitter cold temperatures Thursday for a ride to St. Joseph Ridge.

“It was just 19 below. It wasn’t that bad, really,” said Kyle Klum, 23. “My chin got a little cold, that’s all.”

Bridgette Klum, 22, preferred Saturday’s above-zero temperatures as she and her husband planned their route for the 39th annual Chaseburg Trail Days Poker Run.

They left DeGarmo’s Tippy Toe Inn in Chaseburg and headed for Stoddard and Genoa to collect four additional stamps before meeting back at the Chaseburg Village Hall.

“We felt like going for a ride and thought this would be fun,” Kyle Klum said. “We thought this would be something different to do on our snowmobiles.”

The weather and holidays kept Jason Jorstad, 37, of Chaseburg off his snowmobile until Saturday’s poker run.

“I just haven’t had the time,” he said, seated with six friends at Billy’s Lantern on Hwy. 14/61. “It’s nice to get out there.”

Despite snow earlier this season, snowmobile riders said recent rain, ice and cold have left some area trails a tad “rough.”

They remain optimistic conditions will improve.

Meteorologist Dan Jones said the La Crosse area can expect to see light snow today and Monday, with temperatures in the upper teens and low 20s.

“It’s just something that makes you not hate winter,” said Jerald Widner, 57, of La Farge.

“I like to get outside,” added Vivanna Widner, 57.

The Widners rode through Vernon County with Angie, 29, and Ryan Piepenhagen, 31, of Stoddard on Saturday, passing a number of poker run participants.

“It’s nice because you don’t have to make a decision of where you’re going,” Angie Piepenhagen said. “Wherever the trail takes you, you end up.”

Trail Days events, which continue today, raise money to help maintain area trails, said Harlan Hanson, 73, of Chaseburg. Each year, he said, trails need to be rebuilt and groomed.

From poker and local music to Lutefisk, Bootlegger’s has it all

Although the Hollywood Theatre has garnered a fair amount of attention, Berends has not let it diminish any of the offerings at Bootlegger’s; if anything, he’s increased them.

One of the most popular events at the Supper Club has been the weekly “Poker Night.”

Having opened for the first night of the season this last week, owner, John Berends, said that he had his best turnout for an opening night ever.

“One thing I’ve noticed is the level of play has gotten really good. From one year to the next you can see the improvement in every single one of the players that come back, and they really have a ball,” he said.

And just because the level of play is improving, newcomers don’t need to be discouraged. Berends said that newbies are always welcome and that the close knit group is more than happy to teach and work with those looking to get a handle on the game.

The once a week session runs through January and February, and individuals are welcome to come to one or all eight weeks, he said.

Local music

If you’re not a poker player, Bootlegger’s hosts live music every Friday through March that largely stems from local talent.

Tommy Listul and brothers Ben and Clint Lecy drew rave reviews this past week, and more great music is ahead.

In the coming weeks, in order, Guy Stevermer, Steve Barber and Jerry Ostensoe are on the docket.

While Ostensoe is a household name, Berends says he amazed at the talent that comes to light totally to his surprise, such as the case with Barber.

Berends said that Barber handed him a CD recently and based on its content the Bootlegger’s owner was quick to book his act.

“We have huge resources, a lot of really talented people in the area. And most people aren’t really aware of it.”

He had to include himself in this statement in regards to Barber,

“I had always just known him as the girls’ tennis coach,” he mused.

Much more

While his catering business booms, Berends acknowledges that the economic hardships have correlated with a drop in his patrons.

In response to the times, Bootlegger’s is now offering special lower cost dishes for those of us on a budget. Berends says it a natural change that the Supper Club employs in order meet people’s varying dining habits.

Though it is not a new event, Bootlegger’s annual, professionally facilitated, beer tasting event may also be timed right with the recession when it pops it top on January 31. A fundraiser for the Yellow Medicine County Food Shelf, the benefit is twofold: Those in need see an increase in the amount of food available at the “Shelf,” and what better way to deal with recession than to taste some beer?

On January 22, Norwegians, and wannabes, will enjoy a lutefisk and meatball feed. On February 7 there is a Lion’s Buck Yuker Tournament and the Firemen’s Dance in the evening.

In short, there’s always something going on for everybody, and Berends says he has even more ideas stewing for the coming months.

Morgan’s value bet piques opponent’s curiosity

The object of a value bet on the river is to get the maximum number of chips from your opponent when you believe you have the best hand.

Sometimes you size your bet small enough to induce a curious opponent to call.

But sometimes, as young pro Jordan Morgan showed, you size your bet large enough to convince a loose opponent that you’re bluffing.

In this hand from the 2008 World Series of Poker $10,000-buy-in main event, with blinds at $150-$300, the player under the gun limped. In middle position, Morgan found pocket jacks and raised to $1,800. A player behind Morgan called, as did the original limper.

The flop came 9-6-3, rainbow. The original limper checked. Morgan made it $3,500.

“I was hoping to take it down or get called by a worse hand,” says Morgan, who finished second in the United States Poker Championship main event in 2006. “If I get raised, I’m not really going to like it. I’d have to make a decision based on the players in the hand, but I’ve kind of established the strength of my hand and the strength of their hands just by betting.”

The player behind Morgan folded. The original limper called.

“At this point, I’m pretty sure my hand’s good because I’d expect a raise from a larger pair,” Morgan explains. “I’m thinking he has some kind of medium pair or a draw.”

The turn came the 9 of hearts, a scary card if Morgan’s opponent were slow-playing a set of 9s. “And it’s a card he can bluff,” Morgan says. “If he check-raises, I’d be hard-pressed to call. I’m either way ahead or way behind. If I’m behind, I have only two outs. If I’m ahead, he has only two outs. I just want to get it to a showdown, so I checked behind him.”

The river came the 9 of clubs.

“Now the only hand that beats me is a 9 or kings, queens or aces, and I can’t give him credit for any of those because he just limp-called pre-flop, just called the flop and checked the turn. He showed some strength in a hand where he was willing to put $3,500 in chips into the pot on the flop, so I want to make a big bet that makes it look like a bluff and gets me paid the most whenever he calls.”

Morgan bet $9,750, “about half of his stack, which I thought was about the most he would call.”

The original limper called, then mucked his hand when he saw Morgan’s jacks.

“A lot of times, people will make a medium-sized bet on the river on a hand where they want to get paid and bet big on a bluff,” Morgan says. “I wanted him to think I could have a bluff and I’d get paid the most.”

Commission may put poker back on table

Escambia County Commissioner Kevin White next week will ask his fellow commissioners to reconsider a vote on whether to allow poker cardrooms at Pensacola Greyhound Track.

The board is expected to vote Thursday on whether to set a Feb. 19 public hearing to reconsider the controversial vote.

If White supports it this time — which he wouldn't confirm — it could easily pass.

White was one of the three votes against it on Dec. 11, along with commissioners Marie Young and Wilson Robertson. Commissioners Gene Valentino and Grover C. Robinson IV supported it.

White said his reason for bringing it back up isn't because of a push from constituents.

"I guess when you look at the economy and the way it is, if my vote is going to cost the 60 to 75 jobs at the track, then I want to rethink that because that's the last thing we need is more people out of work," White said.

"The additional jobs (poker could create) are a bonus."

Robertson won't change his vote.

"I am assuming Kevin will (change his vote) or he wouldn't be bringing it back," Robertson said. "I think it's going to cost a lot of families their paychecks. I am not trying to legislate morality, I just don't think our community needs that. There are other jobs we could go after."

Young said she's "not ready to say yet. I have not given it any other consideration since then," she said.

The Florida Legislature created the law several years ago that allows cardroom gaming at parimutuel gaming facilities — greyhound tracks, thoroughbred tracks, jai-alai frontons and harness tracks — but it must be approved by individual counties for it to take effect.

West Chester Twp. men allegedly robbed poker opponent at gunpoint

Two West Chester Twp. men were released from jail earlier this week after being arrested on felony charges when police said they robbed a poker opponent.

Mark E. Mason, 23, of 6200 Strathaven Drive, has been charged with aggravated robbery.

His brother, Matthew B. Mason, 21, of the same address, has been charged with complicity to aggravated robbery.

Both charges are first-degree felonies.

Police said the Mason brothers were playing poker at approximately 2 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, at a friend's apartment at 6616 Fountains Blvd.

Joining them was Michael S. Butler, 22, of Hamilton, according to reports, which describe him as an "acquaintance" of the Masons.

At some point during the game, Matthew Mason pulled out a handgun and demanded Butler hand over his wallet, according to Sgt. Steve Oakes, of the West Chester Twp. Police Department.

While Butler was being held at gunpoint, Mark Mason searched the victim's pants and removed his wallet, Oakes said.

The two allegedly stole about $100 in cash from Butler's wallet and threw the billfold back to him on their way out, Oakes said.

Later that night, the two were arrested by West Chester Police at a nearby Waffle House.

If convicted on the charges, the men could face up to 10 years in prison.

Officials from the Butler County Jail said Tuesday, Jan. 13, the two were released on a court order Jan. 11.

Squabble over Rota poker machines leads to another lawsuit

The fight among investors over control of poker machines on Rota has resulted to another filing of a lawsuit.

Blue Bird. Inc. filed the new lawsuit, which is described by its counsel, Ramon K. Quichocho, as a corporate hijacking case.

Blue Bird sued Byung Kook Choi, Byoong Seob Choi, Kyung Hee Joo, Bo Kyun Choi, and Pacific Rota LLC for beach of fiduciary duty, conversion, and accounting.

Blue Bird asked the Superior Court to order the defendants to pay damages. The plaintiff also requested the court to issue an injunction against the defendants to prevent any future corporate hijacking.

Quichocho stated in the complaint that on Aug. 5, 2003, Blue Bird was incorporated under the CNMI laws and its shareholders are Ok Hwa Lee and Dong Suk Kim.

Blue Bird's officers are Ok Hwa Lee, Dong Suk Kim, and Magdalene M. Taga. Listed as its directors are Ok Hwa Lee, Dong Suk Kim, and Taga. Dong Kyu Lee is its registered agent.

Quichocho said that Blue Bird then engaged in Byung Kook Choi (BK Choi) to manage the corporation.

Quichocho said that on Dec. 30, 2003, unknown to the real officers, directors, and shareholders of Blue Bird, BK Choi and his brother, Byoong Seob Choi (BS Choi), convened on Saipan a “board of directors” meeting of Blue Bird.

The lawyer said in that “meeting” BK became the president and his brother, Byoong Seob Choi, was chosen vice-president of Blue Bird.

In 2004, Blue Bird opened the poker game rooms in Songsong and Sinapalo on Rota. BK Choi managed both locations, but allegedly failed to remit money to the real owners of Blue Bird.

Quichocho said BK Choi claimed that the corporation was not making money.

In 2007, BK Choi changed the Blue Bird license in Songsong to Pacific Rota LLC, without permission from the owners of Blue Bird.

Quichocho said BK Choi and others transferred the poker machines that were in Songsong to Pacific Rota LLC.

Quichocho said that in November 2008, when Ok Hwa Lee and Dong Suk Kim arrived from Korea, they removed BK Choi as caretaking manager for Blue Bird and its business holdings and interests in the CNMI.

The lawyer said the grounds for removal include breach of trust and fiduciary duties by unlawful taking of assets and monies belonging to Blue Bird, engaging in personal business dealings, and filing fraudulent corporate documents.

Court documents show that it was BK Choi and his company, Pacific Rota LLC, who filed the first lawsuit against Quichocho and his wife, Frances, Vianney Hocog, Fidel S. Mendiola, Abelina T. Mendiola, Jung Ja Kim, and Dan Bi Choi, over the squabble on 10 poker machines on Rota.

Choi and Pacific Rota, through counsel Stephen Woodruff, sued the defendants for interference with prospective advantage and contractual relations, trespass, wrongful ejectment, civil breach of peace, conversion, conspiracy, breach of contract, and fraud.

In addition, Choi and Pacific Rota sued Quichocho for an eye poking assault, screwdriver assault, and false imprisonment.

But Frances Quichocho and Tan Dingco LLC, through Ramon Quichocho, also then filed a lawsuit against BK Choi, Pacific Rota, and five unnamed co-defendants.

In the counter-lawsuit, atty. Quichocho said that in October 2008, Pacific Saipan sold its ownership on 10 poker machines to Tan Dingco for $25,000.

The lawyer alleged that even after the purchase of the machines, BK Choi continued to manage the business and refused to report any income or expenses.

Two plead guilty to bookmaking out of Borgata poker room

Two more defendants have pleaded guilty to gambling charges in a mob-linked, multimillion-dollar bookmaking operation that was run out of the high-stakes poker room of one of Atlantic City's casinos.
Nicholas Caltabiano, 25, of Brigantine, and Matthew Zambanini, 29, of Hockessin, Del., have admitted they worked as agents for the betting ring, according to a statement released yesterday by the New Jersey Attorney General's Office.

Each faces a maximum of 364 days in county jail for his role in what State Police have dubbed "Operation High Roller."

Authorities allege that during a 20-month period the gambling operation generated about $60 million in bets while operating out of the poker lounge at the Borgata Casino Hotel & Spa.

The casino cooperated with the State Police investigation which included wiretaps, surveillance videos and informant testimony. The investigation ended with a series of arrests in November 2007.

Caltabiano and Zambanini entered their pleas during brief hearings before Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Michael Donio on Tuesday. To date, 17 defendants in the case, including the reputed leaders of the operation, have entered guilty pleas.

Jack Buscemi Jr., 51, of Mullica Hill, and Andrew Micali, 33, of Ventnor, each face up to five years in state prison based on their pleas to money-laundering and loansharking charges.

Buscemi was described as the boss of the betting ring while Micali ran the day-to-day operations.

Anthony Nicodemo, 37, a reputed South Philadelphia-based mob soldier, faces up to three years after pleading guilty to gambling and money-laundering charges.

Authorities said Nicodemo had a supervisor role in the operation.

Most of the other defendants have pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of promoting gambling that carries a maximum of just under one year in the county jail.

When playing poker, soft playing is same as cheating

What I'm about to say may surprise you. You might be a cheater and not even know it.

If you are in a poker game for money and are taking it easy on one of your buddies, you are cheating yourself, your friend and every other player in the game. I realize that's a bold statement, but it's absolutely true.

In the poker world, we have a term for this type of play. It's called soft playing. When two friends, spouses, relatives or flat out cheaters don't bet against each other, they're soft playing.

Soft playing destroys the integrity of the game of poker and it's wrong.

I realize that many players have no idea that this behavior is so unethical. More often than not, soft playing (not to be confused with slow playing) is done innocently with no harm intended. Perhaps a gentleman doesn't want to take a lady's last $20. Or, one player doesn't want to raise his friend because his friend is losing too much money.

Well, if you are so concerned with your buddy losing money, or if you're trying to get a date by not betting against a beautiful woman, try taking them both out to dinner after the game. The poker table is no place for compassion and kindness. I'm sort of kidding, but I think you get the idea.

The unintended by-product of soft playing a friend is how it affects the action for the rest of the players at the table. For example, let's say that you and a pal both make the final table of a No Limit Texas Hold 'em tournament that pays the top five finishers. There are six players remaining and you and your buddy are still hanging in. Remember, the next player out gets nothing. Everyone at the table wants to see someone get knocked out so that they can finish in the money.

How do you think the other players at the table would feel if you are soft playing your friend? By not playing hard against him, you are absolutely cheating the other players at the table. That may not have been your intention, but ignorance of the rule won't get you off the hook when you get caught. Soft playing in a tournament can result in severe penalties, including disqualification to both you and your friend.

Poker is not a team sport. It's every man for himself. It's perfectly OK to root for your buddies and hope they do well, but when it's time to play the game, you have to give it your all. All by yourself, that is.

Soft playing is, more often than not, totally innocent. But you need to be aware that there are snakes out there, and it's important that you spot them before they team up against you.

If you're playing online and you smell something fishy, e-mail customer support and have them investigate. At reputable poker sites, a representative will look into your claim by reviewing the hand(s) in question, as well as the betting history of the suspected cheaters. If suspicious betting behavior is detected, the crooks will be banned from the site and you will likely receive a refund for the money you lost due to player collusion.

If you see something strange in a live game, notify the floor man immediately and ask him to investigate.

Ford to focus on return of video poker

COLUMBIA — The never dull and often controversial Sen. Robert Ford will run for governor in 2010 on a platform centered on bringing back video poker, the Charleston Democrat told The Post and Courier on Tuesday.

Sen. Robert Ford told The Post and Courier on Tuesday that he plans to run for governor in 2010.
Ford claims video poker would solve South Carolina's woeful financial situation, generating $750 million by taxing the industry that was outlawed here nearly a decade ago. It's the Christian thing to do, he said.

"I decided to run for governor, but it will be a different type of race," Ford said.

Many people would bet money on that.

Rod Shealy, a South Carolina political consultant, said Ford, a native of New Orleans, shouldn't be discounted, despite the senator's bad grammar and freewheeling sense of humor.

"Senator Ford is a fierce political competitor," Shealy said. "He brought a style of Louisiana politics when he came."

Ford, 60, served in the Senate since 1993 and had been a Charleston City councilman from 1974 to 1992. He worked for Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights era, spent years as a car salesman and now is a full time legislator.

He joins an already crowded field of politicians interested in the state's top job when Gov. Mark Sanford's term ends in January 2011.

Republicans who have expressed interest include Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, 3rd District U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett, state Attorney General Henry McMaster and state Rep. Jim Merrill of Daniel Island, who just relinquished the post of House majority leader. Interested Democrats are state Sens. Joel Lourie of Columbia and Vincent Sheheen of Camden and state Rep. James Smith of Columbia.

Ford said his gubernatorial bid would be different because he is working with others to build a coalition that believes taxes on gaming will provide South Carolina with the money it needs to serve the state's neediest while keeping taxes low. Ford wants to put a referendum before the voters to bring back video poker.

Tax collections in the current budget have fallen a billion dollars short of projections, resulting in mid-year cuts. The fiscal year the begins July 1 could be even worse.

"I decided to give the General Assembly up until April to come up with another source of revenue," Ford said. After that, he will put his campaign in full gear.

Sen. Larry Grooms, R-Bonneau, said video poker brings more problems than it could solve and he is skeptical of the money Ford said it will raise.

"There are a number of people who were sad to see video poker go, particularly the ones who were making hundreds of thousands of dollars off the backs of those who were addicted to gambling," Grooms said. He said those same interests could pump big money into Ford's campaign.

Still, Grooms said, "The upcoming gubernatorial race would not be boring if Senator Ford would be a candidate."

Poker establishments cry foul

Several poker establishments are crying foul over a resolution calling for the phase out of all poker machines in the CNMI, except those in licensed casinos, by June 30, 2009, saying it unfairly targets their businesses and puts to waste the thousands of dollars they spent to enhance security, not to mention the lesser revenue for the government and the hundreds of people who will lose their jobs.

The resolution, passed by the Governor's Strategic Economic Development Council, was adopted on Dec. 16, 2008.

Pacific Amusement owners Paul Trombetta and Jim Gebhard said they are not exactly sure what the reason behind the SEDC resolution is.

“It's entirely possible that the members are made up of people connected to competing businesses in the CNMI. Of course, some of their recommendations may be beneficial to their own respective businesses, and that is understandable. I see that one of the signatories does not even live in the CNMI so we wonder what is the true agenda of this body.”

Pacific Amusement operates High Roller I in Garapan and High Roller II in Koblerville. It also manages Bobby's Café along Middle Road.

Poker jobs

Emil De Belen, manager of Treasure Island, meanwhile, said he opposes the SEDC resolution because it would result in the loss of jobs not only for himself but 15 of his co-workers.

It was the same sentiment made by a 35-year-old operations manager of a poker establishment in Garapan, who agreed to speak on condition of anonymity. She said if the SEDC plan pushes through, she will be out of the job and she won't be able to send money to her family back home.

A 32-year-old poker attendant also worries about her job security, especially now since her mother and father are in bad health and she is paying for the college tuition of two of her nephews.

Taking money from the 'poor'

De Belen said it does not make sense outlawing companies like Hanon Investment Saipan, which own Treasure Islands, from operating poker machines, only to allow big hotels to run their own poker parlors.

De Belen, who has been working in the poker industry since 1996, said it would be like taking away money from the poor to give to the rich.

Treasure Island operates 29 poker machines at its 4,000-square-meter Garapan establishment.

Like De Belen, Trombetta and Gebhard also took exception on wordings in the SEDC resolution outlawing poker machines in the Commonwealth, while allowing poker activities in casinos.

“We don't see the logic in this at all. If the concern is the gambling and the effect on families, why would the people who are against poker promote casinos? Is it fair to permit a business activity, any business activity, to a select group of people? For example, would it be fair to allow hotels with 200 rooms or more to be the only businesses allowed to sell alcohol, excluding all of the other businesses in the CNMI? Silly, right? And patently unfair.”

Addiction to vice

The two also questioned SEDC citing increasing poker addiction in the CNMI as the reason behind the move to phase them out.

“Saying that poker machines destroy families is not an accurate statement. Yes, it's true that compulsive gamblers will seek out a way to gamble and often their compulsion will harm their families. Whether it's poker, cockfights, village fiesta gambling, bingo, or a trip to the [Tinian] Dynasty, the compulsive gambler will always find a way to place a bet. We should help the compulsive gambler in the same way we help the alcoholic and drug addict and tax revenues derived from bars and gambling activities should fund this effort.”

A hotel owner who operates four machines but who wishes to remain anonymous, meanwhile, said she feels for individuals and families “victimized” by the addiction to poker.

However, she opposes the SEDC resolution looking for the elimination of poker machines in the Commonwealth because it would lead to the closing of her business. She said the poker machines inside her small hotel are currently the ones sustaining her hotel.

Besides, she said it's not as if poker establishment owners and operators are pointing a gun to their customers' heads.

Trombetta and Gebhard said that, while the government is looking to eliminate poker machines, they should also look at outlawing alcohol altogether.

“There is no doubt that by far the activity that poses the greater harm to families in the CNMI is alcohol. We never hear a cry for relocating the bars to La Fiesta. I wonder why? When you look at the record, most crime in the CNMI is alcohol related, and this includes DUI, crimes of violence, and spousal abuse.”

Magnet for crime?

They also don't believe that poker establishment are magnets for criminal activity.

“Pokers are rarely targets like mom-and-pop [stores] or residences are. Poker casinos are places where there is cash, like other businesses on Saipan like mini marts and banks. When an alcoholic needs a drink or a drug addict needs a fix, and they are determined to rob somebody to get money, they will take the easiest target, but they will get somebody in the end.”

De Belen said it is also unfair for poker establishments to shut down after the government recently required them to make improvements in their operations to safeguard against robberies.

He said Treasure Island had to invest in a CCTV system costing $10,000 as well as hire two security guards for $5 an hour. He said his company has even gone over and beyond the required 10-hour security requirement as his guards look after Treasure Islands 24/7.

Bigger loss

Trombetta and Gebhard fears that if allowed to succeed, the resolution to outlaw poker machines in the CNMI, save for 200-room hotels, would lead to the closure of their establishments.

“We have run some numbers and have determined that we would have to lay off 45 people should we lose our business. Fifty percent of our staffing is local hire. It doesn't take an accountant to figure out that not only would the CNMI lose our license fees that we pay annually, but also our gross revenue tax, jackpot taxes, and corporate income tax.”

They said like the other poker establishments in the CNMI, their closure would have a trickling negative effect on the local economy.

“Additionally the payroll of the 45 people would no longer be in circulation, and neither would the taxes paid by the employees. And let's not forget the rents that we pay for our facilities and operations. How could we meet our lease obligations if the businesses conducted in those premises were banned? Plus there is the considerable investment in capital equipment, leasehold improvements, spare parts and the like. We would end up with a huge writeoff which would negate any tax revenues from our company to the CNMI for many years to come. .Our company will survive because we are diversified, but we would be on a much smaller scale, of course.”

There are a total of 791 poker machines in the CNMI-680 on Saipan, 52 on Tinian, and 59 on Rota. Poker establishments currently pay $12,000 per machine a year, which translates to about $9.5 million in earnings from poker licenses a year for the government.

Time spent at online poker pays off for student

TORONTO

Like any good mother, Zahra Bahmani was concerned when she heard her son was staying up late most nights playing online poker when he could have been studying toward his biochemistry degree at McMaster University. Now, she doesn't nag so much. Poorya Nazari, 22, who got his degree last month, accepted an oversized cheque for $3 million US yesterday as the winner of the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure tournament in the Bahamas.

Norwegian poker prodigy in Melbourne for motza

Annette Obrestad tries out her poker face at Crown Casino. Photo: Wayne Taylor

Among a group of men huddled around a poker table in Crown Casino sits a 20-year-old Norwegian woman named Annette Obrestad.

She is short, confident and stylish; her hot-pink leggings and shiny black boots stand in stark contrast to the T-shirts and beer bellies of her competitors.

And if things go her way during the month-long Aussie Millions Championship, she will leave our shores a couple of million dollars richer.

Obrestad is a poker phenomenon: a high-school drop-out and under-age gambler who has become a record-breaking champion.

"I realised I was talented after I started winning more through poker than my mum was earning in her job," she says during a short break from play. "I've made lots of money. I'm not going to say how much, but it's quite a bit."

According to some reports, she has won at least $US3.3 million, including $US2 million in the World Series of Poker Europe (WSOP) tournament and $US500,000 from various Pokerstars online tournaments.

Obrestad got her start after seeing an advertisement for an online poker website.

"It sounded like fun, so I played a few games and did pretty well," she says. "I was only 15 at the time, so I guess what I did was technically illegal. But I never deposited the money, so I don't feel like I did anything wrong."

At 18, Obrestad became the youngest ever winner of the WSOP Europe tournament, and her $US2 million prize is the biggest single-event payout to a female player. She has since won several other live and online tournaments. Not bad considering she can't even compete in WSOP events

in the United States until she turns 21.

"I dropped out of high school when I was 17," she says. "I just didn't see the point of getting a degree. All it would have done is stopped me from doing what I really want to do for another three years."

Not surprisingly, nearly all her competitors are men

Flordia, New Poker Room !

St. Petersburg, Florida - After six months of construction and nearly $3 million to complete, Derby Lane's newest Poker Room is now open for business.

"We're really proud of the new room," boasted Vice President Richard Winning, whose great grandfather founded the company in 1925. "We adapt as best we can to the changing needs of our customers," said Winning. "We have to remain competitive."

The new poker room is expected to be open every day of the year except Christmas Day, and valet parking is also being offered close by.

Despite the downturn in the economy, Winning's outlook remains positive for the company that has weathered economic storms like the Great Depression and World War II.

Poker Great Tom Dwan: Is He Getting More Than He Gambeld For?

If you keep up with the poker news much, chances are that you have heard the news about Tom Dwan and his boasts. If you don’t know who Tom Dwan is, chances are that you don’t mess much with internet poker as he is a real phenomenon in that niche. He recently challenged anyone who would listen, promising to play head-to-head poker against someone at a no-limit hold’em or pot limit game for 50,000 hands at a minimum of $200/$400. To boot, this was to be done at a minimum of four tables—al all over the Internet.
The catch? If the opponent is ahead even the slightest bit at the end of the 50,000 hands…and we mean the slightest bit…Dwan pledged to make him or her richer to the tune of $1.5 million dollars. If he is ahead at the end of the 50,000 hands the opponent is to pay him $500,000. Needless to say, the winner gets to keep his profits from the session, as well.
As was bound to happen, somebody accepted. Well, a few people accepted. Some great players have accepted, including the great Phil Ivey, David Benyamine, and Patrick Antonius.
Benyamine is set to go up first against Dwan, but that hasn’t been confirmed by Benyamine himself as it came from the mouth of Phil Ivey. These are all great players, and this is bound to be a good round of Poker, with the loser potentially going millions of dollars in the hole.
If Dwan wanted competition, he’s surely got it now. They say poker is a game of gambling, but with the potential to lose millions upon millions of dollars, we think this is a bit extreme.

Asian Poker Tour Adds PLO Event to APT Manila

The Asian Poker Tour has announced the addition of a pot-limit Omaha tournament to the upcoming APT Manila tournament series to take place January 27th-February 1st at the Dusit Thani Manila Hotel in Makati, Philippines. The PLO event, one of six preliminary events on the 2009 APT Manila schedule, is being touted as the first-ever Omaha event for a major poker tour in Asia.

The APT returns to the island country located off the continent's southeast coast after a successful initial stop there last spring. That event featured three preliminary tournaments plus a $2,500+200 buy-in Main Event. All four of last year's tournaments were no-limit hold'em.

Aussie David Saab took down last year's APT Manila Main Event, outlasting a field of 316 players to earn the first prize of $280,000. Saab defeated Korean Chris Roh heads up to take the title. PokerNews was on hand to cover all of the action at last year's APT Manila Main Event, which you can read about here.

The PLO event is not the only bit of variety that has been added to the APT Philippines schedule this time around. Four of the other five preliminary events are no-limit hold'em, although some of those also feature variations from the regular full-table, freeze-out format. One is a "Head Hunter" or bounty event, another is a rebuy event, and a third will be played six-handed. Also among the preliminary events will be a tournament in 13-Card poker, a favorite game in Asia.

As was the case in 2008, this year's APT Philippines Main Event has a $2,500+200 buy-in and again features an expected $1,000,000 prize pool. If last year's event is any indication, expect a number of recognizable pros to make the trip to Manila. Last year saw many notables make the trek, including Huck Seed, Brad Daugherty, Quinn Do, Layne Flack, Dan Schreiber, Michael O'Malley, Paul Darden, Chip and Karina Jett, and Ron Kluber.

Poker Room Review: Boulder Station, Las Vegas, NV

Boulder Station is a large, boxy casino much like most of the other Station Casinos in Las Vegas. It's east of the strip toward Henderson on Boulder Highway. The poker room is clean and a little worn. It's a local's place; I was the only tourist when I visited. Still, I felt right at home.

The chairs are nicely cushioned convention-room chairs. There are no wheels, no height adjustments or reclining features, but they're in good repair and fairly comfortable. There are overhead fans and many vents in the ceilings, but the smell of smoke is obvious in this smoking room. The room is enclosed in glass, thus keeping the smoke in.

There are 11 poker tables – nicely spaced to give the players plenty of room at and between the tables. They are standard issue, nothing fancy. They have firm black cushions along the edge and indented cup holders. There's tight red felt with a small yellow Boulder Station logo and a commitment line. They don't look brand new, but they're kept in good repair and are a cut above just being serviceable.

The room feels much homier than the other Station casinos I had visited during the previous few days (Texas Station and Palace Station). Though I am noticeably an outsider, the staff bends over backwards to make me feel comfortable – telling me about the drink service, making sure I have a seat, asking me if I needed help getting chips, or a drink, and the like.

The players, too, are very friendly. They trade names with me, ask me where I'm from, and then include me in their conversation. I feel relaxed and comfortable as I ask my questions and start to play Omaha.

The room is strictly a low-limit place and, according to the players, "The hottest hi-only Omaha room in the city." When I visited on a Wednesday morning at about noon there were four games going: two $4-$8 Omaha hi, one $2-$4 hold'em, and one $4-8 hold'em. The $4-$8 games are played with a kill. The stakes go up when someone wins two pots in a row.

They never get stud anymore, though the floor pointed out, "They used to try and get a game – but the players didn't cooperate, unfortunately." And they'll spread no-limit, but didn't have it when I was there, nor when I called back on a weekend night to check on the action.

I played for about four hours. The level of play at my $4-$8 Omaha game was generally very poor (though the players were really, really nice). There were usually six players going to the river. I noticed that many had nothing more than non-nut straight and flush draws, even when the board was paired. There were many short buy-ins and the play tended to be extremely passive. I was the only player who ever raised anyone. Players ribbed me good-naturedly about it. Rounds would frequently go by with all five or six players checking.

The room is full of promotions. There are high hand Wednesdays, weekly cash drawings, the Omaha bad beat jackpot, and of course the Jumbo Bad Beat Jackpot that links all of the station casinos together for a bad beat worth at least $150,000. Boulder Station also participates in the Station Casinos $300,000 freeroll, which goes off two or three times every year. There are free drinks and a room service menu for tableside food service. Players earn points that equal about $1 an hour that can be used for anything in the casino, like food or a room. Rooms are typically very cheap – "starting at $29" according to their website.

There's a cost for these promotions, chiefly borne by the players with a $1 drop when the pot hits $10. The house also rakes 10% up to a maximum of $4.

The room doesn't spread tournaments. "We don't need to," said the floor guy, pointing out all of the other promotions and how busy they are. But they do run satellites to the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour events. Actually, they're low buy-in single-table satellites to satellites. Buy-ins are typically $40, with the winner getting a seat at a satellite in another casino, like the Bellagio.

Most of the room's energy goes into keeping their regular patrons happy at their low-limit hold'em and Omaha games. And happy they all seemed to be, as was I. I recommend this friendly low-limit room highly to all smoking players.

Poorya Nazari Wins the 2009 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure

The Canadian Wins $3 Milllion in the Bahamas
The final eight players at the 2009 European Poker Tour PokerStars Caribbean Adventure returned to the Imperial Ballroom at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas to play for the 10th largest poker tournament top prize in history today. The massive field of 1,347 players made this event the largest ever hosted outside of the United States, and it also created a top prize worth $3 million. The final eight had accomplished much to make it this far, and even though they were each guaranteed to walk away with at least $214,000 -- the stakes and tension couldn't be higher.

The early going was rough on the Americans and poker professionals at the final table. Kevin Saul (eighth), Dan Heimiller (seventh), Dustin Dirksen (sixth), Pieter Tielen (fifth), and Team PokerStars Pro Alexandre Gomes (fourth) fell during the first three hours, leaving a big oppurtunity for a new face to emerge in the world of poker, and Benny Spindler held almost twice the amount of both his opponents combined when three-handed play began.

The three-handed battle proved to be the major stretch at the final table, lasting five hours. The final three players continued trading chips as players doubled up and action was slow otherwise. Spindler eventually fell in third place and the Canadian Poorya Nazari took an almost two-to-one lead into the heads-up match against the American Anthony Gregg. In the end it was Nazari who won the $3 million, after a heads-up battle that lasted only four hands.

Party Gaming predicts its future as one of the five major online poker sites

January 2009 In the future there will be only five major online poker sites due to industry, according to Jim Ryan Party Gaming CEO.

According to his prediction only five major online poker sites on the Net will occur in hard times and he intends to ensure that Party Poker is one of them.

Speaking to the UK newspaper The Financial Times, Ryan said:

''We need to retake the hill and position ourselves to be that leader again.''

''Our job, frankly speaking, is to take share back''

Yet he admits, that the increased competition in Europe may make it more expensive for his group to achieve its aim as current industry high-rollers like Poker Stars and Full Tilt up the ante when it come to media buys and teaming up with marketing affiliates.

Ryan is finding it frustrating that Poker Stars and Full Tilt continue to take the risk of operating in the United States market, reports the FT.

This is something Party Gaming ceased to do following the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in 2006. This is something that created a significantly competitive disadvantage for Party Poker.

None the less Ryan was preparing the online poker site for the day when it might be able to legally re-enter the US market in the event of a change in the legislative landscape. He hopes for a successful ''clean slate'' deal with the US Department of Justice.

PokerStars sets a new record for the largest online poker tournament

January 2009 Smashing the Guinness world record for the largest online poker tournament is the world's largest online site poker PokerStars.

Competing for the $111 buy-in-tournament on Sunday were thirty-five thousand players. The action lasted over nine-and-a-half hours and resulted in a payout for a record 8,750 players from a total prize pool of $500,000, or a quarter of all those involved.

The PokerStars experience is certainly a challenge with so much money and competition involved. The Sunday tournaments on PokerStars are suitable for those seeking an unrivaled opportunity to prove their poker prowess. Of course there is the highest level of competition that doesn’t always suit new poker players.

PokerStars achievement also broke their old record with their Sunday Hundred Grand tournament in July 29, 2007, in which 20,000 players competed.

PokerStars broke another world record in the process, when around 250,000 people logged on at the same time to witness the event.

Gambling Planet's Press Coordinator, Rachel Holland explains….
''Online poker rooms are, admittedly businesses. But they're driven by players, people who love the game. It should be the objective of every portal, every blog to ensure that business does not take precedence over player's best interests.''

Castalia bar raided during illegal poker game

Agents from the Ohio Investigative Unit raided a poker tournament at a Castalia bar Sunday, confiscating more than $5,000 in cash, poker chips and other gambling paraphernalia, a spokeswoman for the state's Department of Public Safety said.

Agents have been investigating C & C's Cold Creek Pub, 113 Main St., since Nov. 6, Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Julie Hinds said. A Texas hold 'em tournament was under way when the raid occurred, and agents confiscated $5,256 in cash.

Agents issued 31 citations in total for violations that included operating a gambling house, recklessly permitting public gaming and illegal raffle. The bar was also cited twice for the illegal sale of beer. The infractions occurred Nov. 6, Nov. 13, Nov. 20, Dec. 5, Dec. 11, Dec. 30 and Sunday.

The bar is owned by NJDAC Inc., according to state records.

"It's been a long-term investigation," Hinds said.

No arrests were made, she said.

"We will work with the Erie County Prosecutor's office for any possible charges," Hinds said.

State agents worked independently on the investigation and did not use any local law enforcement, Hinds said.

Police chief Ken Majoy confirmed his department was not involved in the investigation.

"Nobody contacted us. We didn't know anything about it," Majoy said. "We haven't had any problems with the bars."

Majoy said there are two bars in Castalia.

Hinds said it's not unusual for the unit to investigate without involving local law enforcement.

"It depends on the situation," Hinds said.

Md. Trooper Caught In Illegal Poker Game RetiresHAGERSTOWN, Md.

A Maryland State Police trooper who was robbed while allegedly playing in an illegal poker game has retired due to a medical disability, his attorney said Wednesday.

Former Trooper First Class Michael A. Ford, 34, retired due to post-traumatic stress stemming from his role in the wounding of murder suspect Douglas Pryor near Smithsburg in December 2007 after a massive manhunt, said attorney Byron L. Warnken, of Baltimore. Ford fired three shots but none of them hit Pryor, Warnken said.

He said Ford's retirement was unrelated to a high-stakes game of Texas Hold 'Em in a Hagerstown office building where Ford and 17 others allegedly were robbed at gunpoint of about $4,000 by two masked men May 30.

Ford, who was assigned to the Hagerstown barrack, confirmed to investigators he was among the robbery victims, according to charging documents. He hasn't been charged with any crimes.

Prosecutors dropped charges last month against the only suspect arrested for the robbery after a defense attorney argued the suspect's eye color didn't match victims' descriptions.

The man who rented the office for gambling was fined $1,000 in October.

State police spokeswoman Elena Russo says Ford retired Jan. 1 after 10 years, 11 months of service.

Soft poker play is wrong, illegal

What I'm about to say may surprise you. You might be a cheater and not even know it.

If you are in a poker game for money and are taking it easy on one of your buddies, you are cheating yourself, your friend and every other player in the game. I realize that's a bold statement, but it's absolutely true.

In the poker world, we have a term for this type of play. It's called soft playing. When two friends, spouses, relatives or flat-out cheaters don't bet against each other, they're soft playing.

Soft playing destroys the integrity of the game of poker and it's flat-out wrong.

If you are so concerned with your buddy losing money, or if you're trying to get a date by not betting against a beautiful woman, try taking them both out to dinner after the game.

The unintended byproduct of soft playing a friend is how it affects the action for the rest of the players at the table. For example, let's say you and a pal both make the final table of a No Limit Texas Hold 'em tournament that pays the top five finishers. There are six players remaining and you and your buddy are still hanging in. Remember, the next player out gets nothing. Everyone at the table wants to see someone get knocked out so that they can finish in the money.

By not playing hard against your friend, you absolutely are cheating the other players at the table.

But you need to be aware there are snakes out there, and it's important that you spot them before they team up against you.

If you're playing online and you smell something fishy, e-mail customer support and have them investigate. At reputable poker sites, a representative will look into your claim by reviewing the hand(s) in question, as well as the betting history of the suspected cheaters. If suspicious betting behavior is detected, the crooks will be banned from the site and you likely will receive a refund for the money you lost due to player collusion.

If you see something strange in a live game, notify the floor man immediately and ask him to investigate.

More than 1,300 players will compete at the Pokerstars Caribbean Adventure

More than 1,300 players will compete at the Pokerstars Caribbean Adventure in Nassau, Bahamas, for a $2 million first prize. (CHRIS TESSARO photo) NASSAU, Bahamas — There is something unique about the atmosphere at a major poker tournament. What most people see on TV is just a snapshot of the very end of a big event, but, in reality, that’s like watching the last 30 seconds of a football or basketball game. You simply can’t get the feel of a big event without being there.

Aside from the World Series of Poker, the biggest tournament in the world is the PCA (that stands for ‘Pokerstars Caribbean Adventure’). It’s also one of the most fun, since it’s held at the posh Atlantis Resort in Nassau, Bahamas. Most players come here to spend an entire week and the atmosphere and camaraderie is second to none. Usually, when a players busts out of a big tournament, they’re on the first plane home. But here, almost everyone stays to hang out, and enjoy.

But don’t let the resort surroundings fool you: this is still a poker tournament, and one with a $2 million first prize. Over 1,300 players will compete here for a chance at some life-changing prize money. It’s fitting that a walk outside the resort leads directly to multi-million dollar yachts and opulent vacation homes. It’s all part of the dream, and poker players dream big.

And on day one of any poker tournament, the dream is alive. Everyone is bright, chatty, and heavily loaded with anticipation. If there are 1300 players in a tournament, about 1299 of them think they’re going to win it.

That dream dies quickly. Within an hour or two, the hallways outside of the gigantic Atlantis Ballroom are spotted here and there with players telling their bad beat stories of how they were eliminated. For this particular tournament, a large number of players (700 or more) qualified for the event online at Pokerstars. Some are very good...and some are very bad. The bad tend to get a little more time on the beach than the good. In fact, by the end of the event, you can probably tell the players that made the final table by their lack of tans.

Part of the allure for the online qualifiers is the opportunity to play with their poker idols, and there is no shortage of big name poker pros here in Nassau. Since Pokerstars is the sponsor of the event, every member of Team Pokerstars is on hand. World Champions Chris Moneymaker, Greg Raymer, Joe Hachem, and the newest champion, Peter Eastgate, are all on hand. Canadian superstar Daniel Negreanu is stopped every 10 feet in the hallways here at Atlantis for a photo or autograph. And, as a testament to the attractiveness of this tournament to the pros, it’s not just Pokerstars pros plying their trade. Another World Champion, Chris ‘Jesus’ Ferguson is playing, as well as other popular pros like Canadian Gavin Smith, and Antonio ‘The Magician’ Esfendiari. Even legends from other arenas are here. Tennis player Boris Becker is playing, as well as baseball MVP Orel ‘The Bulldog’ Hershiser.

Even in a resort the size of Atlantis, the influx of a couple of thousand poker players has an effect. Every lounge and corner is filled with people having animated discussions that aren’t about deep sea fishing or scuba diving. Instead, their talk is centred on ‘bad flop’s and ‘re-raises’. Poker isn’t just an avocation or a vocation to those here: it borders on obsession. Whether seasoned pro or rank amateur, everyone shares a passion for the game, and that shared passion makes compatriots out of foes. Players who were battling head to head on the felt in the afternoon are sharing a cocktail in the evening.

And let’s not forget the action away from the tournament. Aside from a fully functional poker room with side games that often have thousands in every pot, assembling a large contingent of folks that like to gamble lead to some interesting side bets. Almost anything can become the subject of a wager, from holding your breath in the pool to eating a handful of wasabi. One person at a previous PCA spent four hours in a nightclub holding a handful of French fries to win a $400 bet. That’s life on the tournament trail.

It’s something that can’t be described easily. The best bet is to give it a shot first hand. Qualify online. Buy in. Win your way in. Or, if that doesn’t fit your bankroll, just come and watch. It will give you a whole new appreciation for an already amazing game.

TitanPoker strengthens despite iPoker's split with NoIQ and Carlos Poker6

GamblingPlanet.org denies that the online gambling industry was experiencing hard times, despite iPoker's break with NoIQ and Carlos Poker.

iPoker recently announced that in January 24th 2009 two popular poker rooms would effectively be dropped from its rolls.

In December 2008 the powerhouse poker room network, iPoker and several Tain operated poker rooms split. Changes in the iPoker network membership rules have been the cause of blame for the split for industry insiders.

However Gambling Planet- an authority on the goings on within the online gambling community announced that of all of its poker rooms, among them 888 and iPoker member Titan Poker, were still going strong.

''Fortunately'' commented company President Michal Kadera, '' there are many other iPoker rooms that dispossessed players may join.''

Titan poker is a recently launched poker room and is the biggest member poker room on the iPoker network as well as being a highly endorsed site by GamblingPlanet.org. On Titan Poker Kandera stated…

''We review many poker rooms. But its iPoker rooms like Titan Poker that are popular because of their enormous player bases, excellent tournaments and great bonuses. Titan's popularity, in fact, was one of the reasons Gambling Planet established a poker-specific site.''

Gambling Planet's Press Coordinator, Rachel Holland explains….
''Online poker rooms are, admittedly businesses. But they're driven by players, people who love the game. It should be the objective of every portal, every blog to ensure that business does not take precedence over player's best interests.''

Poker Champion Crowned

It started with 1341 players vying for the $35,000 grand prize at the North Dakota State Poker Championship.

After hours of deciding whether to hold`em or fold`em the field was narrowed to ten, then two, and the rest was history.

Sam Dickson of Saskatchewan outlasted Shane Duchscherer of Minot and became the first Canadian champion in the five year tournament history, but he wasn`t confident heading into the final hand.

"I thought I was done, when he called I was sure he had the better hand. I was trying to push him out," says Dickson.

Dickson`s victory was the end to a grueling 15 hour day for both players and those running the event.

"This was the best tournament we`ve done by far, everything fell together so much nicer. Everyone stepped in and filled their roles very well." says Tournament Director Mitch Schock.

As for the champion, Dickson hopes to use this win as a learning experience.

"Hopefully I can compete with Mitch in the World Series someday," says Dickson.

This years tournament was held in honor of 2007 champion Curtis Langford.

Langford died last August of pancreatic cancer.

Many players donated a portion of their winnings to the Langford family, including Chastity Askvig, who`s historic run to the final table was all about honoring a lost friend

"I wasn`t in it for the money, that`s for sure. I had no idea what I won," says Askvig

Askvig became the first woman to finish in the top ten and used the advice and support she received from Langford to help her through.

"He always told me you go girl so that was my goal to make the final table for him and for other women," says Askvig.

The tournament has grown each year as players from ten states and throughout Canada made their way to Minot this week.

The three day event drew over a thousand specatators, and has quickly become a must see event throughout the region.

PokerStars sets a new record for the largest online poker tournament

Smashing the Guinness world record for the largest online poker tournament is the world's largest online site poker PokerStars.

ESPN On Hand For World Series Of Poker Europe

Eight Hours Of Super Bowl Counter-Programming Coverage Set For Feb. 1

Next month, ESPN will deal viewers into eight original hours of coverage of the World Series of Poker from across The Pond -- the Europe Main Event from the Casino at the Empire in London.

Featuring 362 top players from The Continent, the U.S. and around the globe, the competition took place over a six-day period, with the initial field divided into two starting days, and culminated in a final table that took more than 19 hours to complete. At stake: a first place prize of more than $1.5 million and the highly coveted WSOP – Europe Main Event bracelet.

ESPN’s coverage of the World Series of Poker – Europe is scheduled to begin Feb. 1, also known as Super Sunday, at 6 p.m., followed by an encore presentation of the first two hours on ESPN2 at 10 p.m., co-hosted by Lon McEachern and Norman Chad. The remaining six hours will air in two-hour installments on Feb. 8, Feb. 15 and March 1, respectively, on ESPN2.

The cavernous Amazon Room at the Rio in Las Vegas, which housed all of the tournaments held last summer, has given way to a small club where players are seated at tables on two different levels; off in a side room, under the stairs, behind the bar, near the roulette tables, and in front of an ice cream shop.

Thanks to a new innovation called the mobile hole card camera, for the first time ever, ESPN will be able to show the hole cards from key hands at many of these outer tables in addition to the feature table.

“We believe the mobile hold card camera will provide fans a great understanding of the overall story behind the tournament, and how the players advanced to the final table,” said Jamie Horowitz, ESPN senior sports producer, in a statement.

Video poker fees raised in Sanford

Local clubs and organizations in Sanford will have to pay an additional $100 each year to operate video poker machines.

The Sanford Town Council approved a new ordinance Dec. 30 raising the annual fees from $50 to $150.

Approved unanimously on a second reading, the ordinance also states that club owners must sign an affidavit declaring the machines are not being used illegally.

The Town Council Chairman Joe Hanslip said the ordinance was written in response to longtime rumors that local fraternal organizations have been using the video poker machines illegally.

Under state law, clubs are allowed to have the machines as long as they don't pay out.

Local clubs that have the machines include the Sanford Knights of Columbus, the Wolves Social Club, the Sanford American Legion Post 19 and other fraternal organizations.

The clubs have used the proceeds – obtained through the quarters required to play the games – to donate to charities and contribute to local organizations.

Despite that, no representatives from the clubs argued against the new ordinance at the two public readings.

Sanford Wolves Social Club President Norman Hutchins said he wasn't surprised by the decision to raise the machine fees.

"I knew the councilors had been considering this," said Hutchins last Wednesday. "It's a very significant raise in fees – 200 percent – but I guess the town just really needs money."

Dubbo country capital for poker machines

Mayor Greg Matthews is calling for a reduction in poker machine numbers after four Dubbo pubs were ranked among the 500 NSW hotels raking in $1.1 billion a year from punters, many of them unable to afford their losses.
The South Dubbo Tavern, Macquarie Inn, Amaroo Hotel and Westside Hotel are ranked 305, 344, 395 and 451 respectively, effectively making Dubbo the country capital for profitable pub poker machines.

The top 500 list is dominated by Sydney-based hotels with a sprinkling of country pubs including two in both Orange and Wagga Wagga, and one in Moree.

According to the Daily Telegraph the 500 hotels share more than two-thirds of the total pub poker machine revenue Statewide, equating to a $200 loss by every adult.

The top 25 sucked in $150 million alone, with all but two in Sydney’s west or southwest, it reported.

Mayor Matthews is one of many now calling for change in the light of the billion-dollar blow-out that some argue will grow as gamblers look to the pokies for a quick financial fix if the economy stumbles.

While he declined to comment specifically on the top 500 list, Cr Matthews said: “I’m always disappointed with the amount of money that goes into poker machines.

“I believe there should be tighter controls. We know there are problem gamblers and as a society we should be trying to help them.”

The mayor believes the State should be “reducing” the number of poker machines and making them “less accessible” through simple methods such as dress codes.

“If people have to go home and get changed ... they might not get caught on their way home from work,” Cr Matthews said.

Others are suggesting restricted hours of play and the removal of machines in problem areas where addicts and their families are forced into welfare queues.

But the Australian Hotels Association has hit back, highlighting programs and counselling services that aim to prevent problem gambling by “less than one per cent” of the population.

It has also rejected claims that pubs making profits out of poker machines pose a greater threat to social wellbeing than non-profit clubs with “three times” as many machines.

State Poker Championships Underway

After months of anticipation it was time to shuffle up and deal at the 2009 North Dakota State Poker Championship, and everyone was hoping to bring in the grand prize of $35,000.

"I just hope to get good cards and play well," says Canada native Barb Cuthill.

"There are a lot of good poker players in North Dakota, so if they want to get serious at the table we can get serious," says Poker Pro Robert Hainsworth.

On January 1st more than 1,300 people from 32 states and three countries made their way to the Vegas Motel to be a part of the action, a far cry from the 300 people who played in the first tournament in 2004.

"It`s becone a lot like the World Series of Poker, but not as big of course," says Tournament Emcee Mitch Schock.

Schock has seen poker grow throughout the country.

In 2006 he placed 29th in the largest poker event of all time, the 2006 World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.

Tournaments like this aren`t just about getting lucky, its about patience and mental toughness.

"After seven or eight hours at the poker table you`re tired, you`re hungry. It`s a long day," says Schock.

Barb Cuthill has made the trip from Canada to play in four of the five tournaments and has made the event a family affair, playing alongside her husband and two sons.

"They`re all interested in it and they come with us, we`re pretty competitive too," says Cuthill.

Taking home the title will be a daunting task, and the winner will need the perfect storm of skill, luck and most of all patience.

"It`s going to take a lot of luck. Obviously you need to play well, but you`ve got to get good cards," says Minot resident Kellen Hunter.

"For one thing it`s going to take patience, and it`d be nice to have a big stack going into the second day," says Hainsworth.

Most importantly if you have a chip you have a chair, meaning everyone has a chance to walk out $35,000 richer.

Politics and Poker: The Next Sin Tax?

Denis Campbell
Editors' note: Contributing columnist Denis Campbell brings an independent and experienced eye to poker's political scene. Campbell has worked closely in the past with former Cabinet Secretaries in the Carter and Clinton administrations, Ambassadors and members of Congress. He offers commentary on US and UK politics for the BBC and Huffington Post. Here, Denis offers his insights on matters affecting poker. Denis' views do not necessarily reflect those of PokerNews.

Last week, Ohio Governor Ted Strickland placed himself at the front of the Obama infrastructure and state aid queue, saying his state needs an immediate infusion of $5 billion to survive a projected budget shortfall of $7.3 billion, this despite laying off 3,000 state workers.

His state, like most others, is looking to fill budget holes anyway they can. Gaming (both online and in casinos) presents tax/revenue opportunities that "sin" taxes – alcohol and cigarettes – no longer fill. Even in today's economy, cigarettes face state and local tax increases of between $.30 and $1.00 per pack raising the price to $3.00 on average and $25-$30 a carton. An addict will cut back under those types of price increases.

The urgent need for revenue has created a flood of state gaming tax proposals and could mean swift action on the repeal of UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act) via legislation currently sitting in Barney Frank's House Banking Committee. Repeal under a new administration and Democratically-controlled Congress could zoom to the top of a very full list of priorities sooner rather than later. If it doesn't, states like California will move it to the top of their lists... and therein lies a danger.

States will move quickly to generate tax revenue and fees from online gaming but are not structured to handle the complexity. Can you imagine online sites setting up different rakes for each state depending on where you live, or charging you a higher per-game entry fee to play from, for example, California or Kentucky, based solely on your location? If you think you have no privacy now, can you imagine what they will need to do to charge the correct tax rate across 50 states and the District of Columbia?

Being careful what one wishes for could become the guiding rule for a return to online gaming in the US. The barriers to market entry for companies based in Malta, Bermuda, Channel or Cayman Islands could become even more difficult than they currently are.

Also, do not underestimate the power and deviousness of the American far right. While crippled in the last election, they are still a force to be reckoned with on their base's white-hot morals issues, which also include abortion, immigration, gaming, state religion (Christianity), homosexual marriage and adoption. They were, for example, unable to repeal Roe v. Wade so instead they introduced a potentially crippling rule allowing health care professionals to use their conscience and overrule their medical responsibility to provide legal health services such as abortion or birth control.

These are very smart adversaries who have learned through failure to never attack the real issue. Instead, UIGEA attacked the payment system, making that illegal, not gambling itself. If you cannot collect money, you shut down online gaming. Look for them to find and exploit a similar Achilles heel in the future.

Another problem within states is the intricate maze of controlling authorities. Historically anti-gaming Florida (except on the federally controlled Seminole Indian reservation), is a state where commercial gaming is regulated by: the Division of Pari-mutuel and Wagering within the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), The Florida Lottery, and the Office of the Attorney General of Florida. I kid you not. Each has an interest in stopping gaming separate from Governor Crist's desire to raise funds. Racetrack owners and the lottery don't want competition and the Attorney General has to run for re-election in an anti-gaming state. Add in the repeal/restructure of UIGEA (at the federal level) on top of that and it becomes a volatile mix.

Also, watch for slot machine manufacturers to gain an online foothold as they eye a potential windfall. Bally Technologies unveiled a "slot machine built for two" last month at the global Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. The company is hoping the concept will catch on as "an ingenious way for people to share the casino gaming experience."

Hmm, people playing against each other online at slots, draw poker, and no-limit Texas hold'em? One could ask if the introduction was a case of suspicious timing, or was it a marketing masterstroke where quick adaptability helps to ensure one's survival? Goldman Sachs' gaming analysts already project that Bally's and other manufacturers will gain mightily as states look to plug shortfalls with wider, more accessible gaming.

So it could be a good year for online gaming, just heavily regulated and taxed. And punters can expect to pay much more for the privilege.
